Whole Home Rewiring

Jan 26, 2024

Many homeowners will not give a thought to their home's wiring until there's an issue or they get an inspection when preparing to sell their home, but the electrical wiring in your home is extremely important to keep up to date in order to keep you and your family safe!

Why Look Into a Home Rewiring?

Every three years, the National Fire Protection Association updates the National Electrical Codes for new safety rules and to accommodate new technology. It's through this code that we get requirements for things like GFCIs, appliances on their own circuits, number of outlets per circuit, etc. Most homes that have been built in the last 20 years should be up to code, but if your home is any older, it's important to get a home inspection to determine safety concerns.

Home electrical fires account for around 51,000 fires each year, close to 500 deaths, more than 1,400 injuries and $1.2 billion in property damage. Electrical safety is our top priority, and we want our customers to be safe, too!

Warning Signs Your Home May Be In Need of Rewiring:

  • Your home was built more than 40 years ago and has not been upgraded

  • You have breakers that trip regularly

  • Your lights dim or flicker regularly

  • You have knob and tube wiring

  • You have two-pronged outlets throughout the home

  • There are no GFCI outlets in the required areas (basement, bathroom, kitchen, etc.)

  • Your panel is Federal Pacific (FPE) or Pushmatic

  • Light switches or outlet plates are discolored or burnt

  • You see sparks, hear buzzing sounds or smell something burning

  • You get shocked when touching switches or outlets

If any of these red flags apply to your home, call today for a free home inspection. We will take the time to carefully review each component of what is required with the current 2023 NEC, then we will make customized estimates tailored to what you would like to address.

The Cost of Whole Home Rewiring

The average cost to rewire an entire home is $7,000, but as this is the average, we estimate anywhere between $3,000-20,000. This price can vary dramatically depending upon several things.

Firstly, your home rewire cost will depend upon the size of your home.--the larger the home, the greater the expense, as it will take more parts and labor to complete the job.

Secondly, the age of the home will also factor in - the older the home, typically the higher the cost, as more components are likely to need addressing and the wiring may not be as easily accessible. Older homes may require more than a newer home - the panel may need to be a part of the upgrade, for example. Many older homes were built with 100 amp panels. These are usually not enough to accomodate our modern electricity usage. The NEC recommends a 150 amp or 200 amp panel to provide power and avoid overheating.

Finally, the electrician you choose will impact the cost. It's a great idea to shop around and get a few estimates on the project before making a commitment. You will want to choose an electrician you can trust with this large of a project - ensure they're vetted by their reviews, check up on their electrical license, and ask if they provide a satisfaction guarantee on their work.

Not only will a whole home rewiring ensure you, your family and your home are safe, it will also increase your home's value. Whenever you decide it's time to move on from your home, you'll find that your rewire was well worth the investment.
