Top Considerations of a Bathroom Remodel

There are several factors to consider when remodeling a bathroom. One of the most important considerations is electrical safety. After all, the bathroom is one of the locations in the home exposed to most moisture and also has several electrical components! Here are some considerations for both safety and functionality to consider when you are remodeling your bathroom.

Safety

Safety is the top priority. One of the most common safety failures found in bathrooms is non-grounded outlets. If your home is newer, then it's likely most if not all of your outlets are grounded. If you have any two-prong outlets in your bathroom, however, these should be noted to swap out upon remodel. Electric shock is greatly reduced when an outlet is grounded, which is very important to keep in mind in a wet atmosphere like the bathroom.

Per code, at least 1 GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) must be installed per bathroom. When using appliances in a bathroom, such as hair dryers or heaters, these are essential. Plugging these in while even a little damp could grant you a shock. GFCI outlets will trip when a short circuit occurs, protecting you and your hand!

Power

Knowing how much power to pull to your bathroom is vital, as several appliances and devices may pull more power than you think. Consult your electrical contractor to discuss any specific needs. In general, a larger amp circuit (20amps +) is required to accommodate an exhaust fan and overhead lighting.

Functionality

Another code requirement for all bathrooms is that an exhaust fan be present. Any bathroom 50 square feet or smaller requires a 50 CFM minimum. The requirements increase as your bathroom size increases. Exhaust fans help to remove moisture from the bathroom to prevent condensation and possible mold build up on walls and the ceiling. They also help the bathroom stay smelling fresh! There are several models of exhaust fans on the market, some that can be upgraded with LED lights and bluetooth speakers.

Lighting is another top consideration when remodeling a bathroom. While an overhead light is all that is needed, take time to consider the tasks you'll complete in the bathroom and which fixtures may best suit your needs. Vanity lights may be useful if you spend some time in front of the mirror getting ready. Sconces or can lights may be best suited to your aesthetic taste.
