While we are an electrical contractor, not an HVAC company, your HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) system is intrinsically connected with your electrical system. Ensuring that your HVAC system is maintained is critical to its longevity and performance and will save you money on your electric bill. There are many do-it-yourself things you can do to maintain this system:
1. Monitor Your Air Filters
This is the easiest first step to take to ensure your system is operating properly. Dirty filters prevent your system from running efficiently. If your filter is dirty, it will restrict airflow, making your blower motor work overtime. Overtime work on a blower motor will reduce its lifespan. Regularly check your air filter and change as needed. 90 days is the standard recommendation for swapping these out, but it's a good idea to check them every 30 days. Pets, dust and open windows may increase the frequency needed.
2. Clean Ducts and Registers
Your ducts and registers are the delivery system for your AC and heating in your home. Vacuuming out these areas regularly will again help your system run more efficiently and smoothly over time. A professional will need to be hired to get them 100% clean, but some of this can be done yourself.
3. Clean Debris from Outdoor Units
Your outdoor unit will likely get leaves, pollen, dirt and sticks around or in it due to its location. Freeing this from debris will allow it to run efficiently as it maximizes airflow. If you are going to take the cage off the unit, be sure to cut the power first.
4. Check Your Evaporator Drain
There is an evaporator coil in your HVAC system that absorbs heat from the air, cools it and then releases it into your home. Any humidity captured will go down the evaporator drain. This drain can become clogged by algae and mold, so it's important to check it periodically. Pouring a mixture of bleach and water one time per year can help prevent mold growth.
All of these preventative measures and DIY maintenance tips will ensure your HVAC system is running efficiently, saving you money on your electric bill.
